Elle Macpherson speaks openly for the first time about her journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer, which the Australian model was diagnosed with seven years ago.
Elle Macpherson (60) is speaking openly for the first time about how she dealt with her breast cancer diagnosis. She found out about the disease seven years ago. “It was a shock, it was unexpected, it was confusing, it was disheartening in many ways,” said the Australian model.
Macpherson said that after a small tumor was removed from her breast, a doctor called her and told her it was “HER2-positive estrogen-receptive intraductal carcinoma,” a type of breast cancer, according to the journal. Macpherson was then advised to undergo cancer treatment, including a mastectomy and chemotherapy.
But despite this medical advice, despite her own anxiety and, to some extent, to the dismay of her family, she decided otherwise. “I wanted to find a solution that worked for me,” and so she chose a “holistic approach” that did not involve chemotherapy or medication. She goes on to explain: “Saying no to standard medical solutions was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. People thought I was crazy.”
Mixed reactions in the family
Elle Macpherson is now in “clinical remission,” as she said, but prefers to describe it as “complete well-being.” “Really, in every way, every blood test, every scan, every imaging study… but also emotionally, spiritually and mentally – not just physically,” she emphasizes in the interview.
But she also admits that her sons Flynn (26) and Cy (21) as well as her former partner (1996-2005), French manager Arpad Busson (61), had mixed reactions to her unusual handling of the cancer diagnosis.
Her youngest son fully supported his famous mother, but her eldest had reservations. “Flynn, who is more conventional, did not agree with my decision at all. But he is my son and supports me in everything and loves me, even if he does not agree with my decisions,” said Elle.
As for Arpad Busson, from whom Elle Macpherson separated in 2005 after almost ten years together, Flynn and Cy’s father “did not agree” with her methods. However, he wrote her a sympathetic letter.
