Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix talk about weight loss

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga lost a lot of weight for their roles in the new “Joker” film. Addressing Gaga in Venice, Phoenix said: “I met you and we rehearsed. Then you were away for a month and when you came back you had lost a lot of weight. That was really impressive. It seemed very difficult.” Gaga confirmed this and added: “I think we transformed into our characters over time and worked on every detail.”

“Joker: Folie à Deux” is the sequel to the acclaimed thriller by Todd Phillips (2019). This time Lady Gaga plays Phoenix’ Page plays the second main role. The film, which is in competition at the film festival, is a mixture of thriller and musical.

Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) is in prison after the murders he committed as the Joker in part one. While he is awaiting trial, he meets the love of his life – played by Lady Gaga, who plays a variant of the comic book character Harley Quinn named Lee.

“Joker: Folie à Deux” is in competition at the Venice Film Festival and will premiere tonight. In 2019, the first part of the comic book adaptation won the top prize in Venice. Phoenix was also awarded the Oscar for best actor. At the time, Phoenix also spoke about how he had lost a lot of weight for the role.

When asked how much weight he lost for the role this time around, he said, “I don’t know. I can’t remember.” He regrets talking about it so much in the first film. “It becomes an obsession because you’re struggling and trying to get to a certain weight and then you can’t help but talk about it. And then you sound like an actor talking about how much weight you’ve lost.”

In the end, he was angry with himself for talking about it so much. “This time I told myself I wasn’t going to do it. So I wasn’t going to do it, but it was 47 pounds,” he joked. “No, I don’t know.”
