Alex Morgan has announced her retirement. The footballer also explains that she is expecting her second child.
Alex Morgan (35) is one of the superstars of international football. On September 5, the exceptional athlete and two-time world champion announced that she was retiring from the sport. Not only did she announce her imminent retirement, she also made it public that she was pregnant again.
Alex Morgan: “I’m retiring”
“I’m retiring and I have so much clarity about this decision,” she says, visibly moved in the video. She is “so happy to finally be able to share it with you,” explains Morgan, taking a short breath during the recording. “It’s been a long time coming and this decision was not an easy one for me, but at the start of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season I would play football.”
Football was one of the first things she ever loved and has been with her for 30 years. She gave everything and always supported women in sport, “because we deserve it.” Morgan, whose daughter Charlie (4) was born in 2020, has been married to former professional footballer Servando Carrasco (36) since 2014.
Little Charlie recently told her that she too wanted to be a soccer player when she grew up. That made Morgan immensely proud, not because she wanted her child to become a professional, but because even a four-year-old could see that “there is a path.”
“Charlie is becoming a big sister”
Charlie will not only become a professional footballer at some point, but will also soon be “a big sister”. Morgan confirms in the clip: “I’m pregnant.” Although this was unexpected, the couple are extremely happy about it. Family means everything to Morgan. And she wouldn’t be where she is today if her husband and family hadn’t supported her and “made sacrifices for me over the past 15 years as a professional athlete.”
Morgan will play her last game next Sunday, September 8th.
