Matt Reeves confirmed to SFX magazine that “we are finishing the script now” for The Batman Part II and “the plan is to film next year.” Warner Bros. announced earlier this year that the release of the sequel starring Robert Pattinson would be delayed a full year, from October 2, 2025 to October 1, 2026.
“Colin [Farrell] “It will be part of the movie,” Reeves said of the Penguin’s return. “We’ve shared [el guion] as we move forward with DC and the studio and they are very excited.”
The Batman universe is expanding with the upcoming Farrell-focused TV series, The Penguinwhich Reeves said will be the “entry point” into The Batman sequel, adding, “There are details that really connect directly to how the next movie starts and how Oz enters that world as we hand the baton back to Batman, and Batman is on another case.”
What will the sequel to The Batman be like?
As for the Batman sequel, the director said that it will “dig deeper into the epic story about the deepest corruption and go to places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this is going are all in the first movie. It expands in a way that will show you sides of the character that you never got to see.”
“Batman is constantly fighting these forces, but it is not possible to completely exorcise them, so the next film delves deeper into them,” he added.
The Penguin will appear again in the new filmbut it remains to be seen whether more Batman villains will appear. Fans have called on Reeves to add supernatural villain Gentleman Ghost to the sequel, but he told SFX that won’t be happening because it doesn’t fit with his realistic take on the comics.
“The important thing for me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythical characters that everyone knows, and translate them in a way that makes Gotham feel like a place in our world,” Reeves said. “We could go to the edge of fantastical, but we would never go to full fantastical. It’s supposed to feel pretty grounded.”
Reeves continued: “That doesn’t mean we won’t see characters that people love. That’s exactly what we want to do. Gentleman Ghost is probably too far-fetched for us to find a way to do, but there’s a fun way to think about how we would take characters that might reach a little bit of the fantastical and find a way to make sense of that.”
The Batman was a box office success with $772 million worldwideso Warner Bros. is surely hoping the sequel will be a hit. It is unknown at this time if the original stars Zoe Kravitz (Catwoman) or Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth) will also be back for the sequel.
Meanwhile, The Penguin TV series premieres September 19 on Max.
