Kathy Bates can look back on a long and award-winning career. But she apparently wants to end it as Madeline Matlock.
Kathleen Doyle “Kathy” Bates (76) has been working in the Hollywood business for over 50 years. Now the Oscar winner has announced that she has dedicated herself to her last role: Bates revealed that after the reinterpretation of the successful series “Matlock” she wants to turn her back on both the TV and cinema camera. “This will be my last dance,” the star is quoted as saying regarding “Matlock”.
Acting has become her entire life, Bates continued. Because she always gave it her all and “couldn’t hold back,” her profession has increasingly left its mark – “it’s exhausting.” She therefore wants to retire after “Matlock.”
Does success delay retirement?
The pilot episode will premiere as a sneak peek on September 22nd of this year on CBS in the USA. The official series launch is scheduled for October 17th. The broadcaster has ordered 18 episodes, so Bates will be on TV for quite some time, either way.
And who knows: If the reboot of the 80s series with actor Andy Griffith (1926-2012) in the title role turns out to be a success, Bates’ “last dance” could possibly last a long time and span several seasons. The famous TV lawyer Benjamin “Ben” Matlock was on the show for nine seasons and in almost 200 episodes from 1986 to 1995.
Madeline Matlock succeeds Ben Matlock
The official description of the reboot states: “After achieving success in her younger years, the brilliant Madeline Matlock (Bates) returns in her seventies to work at a prestigious law firm. There she uses her humble demeanor and savvy tactics to win cases and uncover corruption.” In this country, “Matlock” will probably be shown via Paramount+, but there is no official release date yet.
Kathy Bates won an Oscar in 1991 for her role in the Stephen King adaptation “Misery” and was nominated for an Academy Award three more times. She has also won two Emmys and two Golden Globes.
