Bruce Springsteen’s wife Patti Scialfa has revealed that she is suffering from blood cancer, which she was diagnosed with six years ago.
Bruce Springsteen’s (74) wife, Patti Scialfa (71), has spoken for the first time about the fact that she has been battling the malignant tumor disease multiple myeloma for six years. The blood cancer forms in the plasma cells of the bone marrow.
In the documentary “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” which premiered on September 8 at the International Film Festival in Toronto, the singer describes when she learned about the disease: “In 2018, Bruce and I were doing a play on Broadway. I was diagnosed with early-stage multiple myeloma.”
“Touring has become a challenge for me”
The “Road Diary” documentary follows Springsteen’s band as they prepare for and start their current tour. It will be released on October 25 on Hulu and Disney+. The 71-year-old, who has been a background singer and guitarist since 1984, says: “It was a great feeling to be back on stage during those first performances. Touring has become a challenge for me.” The disease affects her immune system, which is why she has to be more careful “about what I do and where I go.” Since 2023, she has rarely been on stage. “Every now and then I come to a concert or two and can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s a pleasure. That’s the new normal for me at the moment, and I can live with that.”
Bruce Springsteen was also not feeling well
Patti Scialfa has been the wife of “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen since 1991. The couple has three children. The musician himself has been suffering from health problems for some time. He has had to take a break from his world tour several times – most recently, concerts in Prague and Milan at the end of May and beginning of June were postponed due to vocal problems.
He had to interrupt the US part of the tour in September 2023. A stomach ulcer slowed the rock star down at the time. He canceled all planned dates in his home country until the end of the year. In March 2024, the “Born in the USA” singer reported back in Phoenix, Arizona. Triggered by the stomach ulcer, Springsteen had already been suffering from vocal problems last year. His diaphragm hurt so much that he was afraid he would never be able to sing again, as he revealed in a radio interview during his comeback in the spring.
