Each September 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day. This is a major public health issue with far-reaching social, economic and emotional consequences. It is estimated that there are more than 700,000 suicides each year worldwide.

These events, in addition to resulting in death, generate a great psychological impact on the people close to the victim. That is why it is important to spread information to recognize and be able to help a person who is in a state where they are considering the possibility of taking their own life.

Why is World Suicide Prevention Day commemorated every September 10?

In order to help those in need, the World Health Organization (WHO) together with the International Association for Suicide Prevention declared this day of solidarity and fight against this problem in 2003. The objective is to focus attention on this situation, reduce the stigma associated with it and raise awareness among organizations, governments and the public, raising awareness about how suicide can be prevented.

The final motto of the commemoration is “Creating hope through action” and was the main driving force between 2021 and 2023, implying that there are alternatives to suicide and through our actions we can encourage hope and strengthen prevention.
