What is the problem? Why Santiago del Estero?
The San Genaro Foundation has focused its efforts on Santiago del Estero due to the deep needs that the province faces in various critical areas:
- Rural Education: Santiago del Estero has the largest number of primary school students in rural areas in the entire country, highlighting the importance of rurality and education in this province. The Foundation works to ensure that these children receive a quality education, despite geographical and economic barriers.
- Human Development: According to the United Nations, Santiago del Estero is among the four provinces with the lowest human development index in the entire country, which is reflected in factors such as life expectancy, education and per capita income. The Foundation strives to improve these indicators through health, education and economic development projects.
- Access to Basic Services: Santiago del Estero is one of the three provinces with the worst records in access to basic public services, according to the 2022 Census. The lack of access to drinking water, electricity and sanitation is particularly serious in rural areas, and the Foundation works to improve these conditions through infrastructure projects.
- Drinking water: 26.4% of the population does not have access to running water and almost 19% must travel to get it. These figures are even higher in rural areas, indicating the urgent need to improve access to safe water. The Foundation has implemented projects for the construction of wells and water distribution systems in rural communities.
- Educational Performance: According to the results of the APRENDER tests, Santiago del Estero is among the three provinces with the lowest percentage of primary school students with satisfactory or advanced performance in Language. The San Genaro Foundation is committed to improving these results through reading comprehension programs and the promotion of literature.
- Connectivity: More than 40% of students in Santiago del Estero do not have access to the Internet at home, and this figure rises to almost 50% in rural areas. Improving connectivity is essential to reducing the digital divide, and the Foundation is working on projects to provide schools and communities with Internet access.
