Nicole Kidman mourns her mother: No appearance at the Toronto Film Festival

Her mother died ten days ago: Nicole Kidman did not attend the North American premiere of “Babygirl” at the Toronto Film Festival.

Nicole Kidman (75) has missed another event because of the death of her mother. On September 7, the actress had to leave the awards ceremony at the Venice Film Festival because she had heard of her mother’s death. She was also unable to attend the North American premiere of her new film “Babygirl” on September 10 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Director Halina Reijn explains absence

On stage at the film festival in Canada, “Babygirl” director Halina Reijn (48) spoke of a “very emotional experience” in Venice. “Nicole Kidman has just won the award for best actress. Unfortunately, just before she was about to go on stage and accept the award, she learned of her mother’s death and had to rush to her family, which is why she is not with us this evening,” Reijn told those present.

Kidman is very sorry about her absence. “She wanted us all to know how much she was looking forward to this day,” said the director. The North American premiere in Toronto was “something very special.”

“Shock” over Janelle Ann Kidman’s death

At the Venice Film Festival, Halina Reijn read a statement from Nicole Kidman on stage, in which she made public the death of her mother Janelle Ann (1940-1984) at the age of 84. “I am in shock and have to go to my family, but this award is for [meine Mutter]. She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me,” it said.

In the erotic drama “Babygirl,” Kidman plays a married businesswoman who plunges into an affair with a much younger intern. In Venice, she won the award for “Best Actress” in absentia. “Babygirl” will be released in German cinemas on January 16, 2025.
