Despite Parkinson’s: New film by Lars von Trier in the works

A Danish film funding listing reveals that the notorious and celebrated director is working on a new feature film. It is his first film since his Parkinson’s diagnosis.

The award-winning Danish director Lars von Trier (“Antichrist”, “Melancholia”) appears to be working on his first film since it was announced that he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. This is according to an overview of funding allocations for 2024 by the Danish Film Institute. The 68-year-old is listed as the screenwriter and director of a film with the provisional title “After”.

The film is reportedly still in the development phase and will receive funding of 1.3 million Danish kroner (around 175,000 euros). What the film is about, when it will be released and which actors will be featured in it are not clear from the listing. “After” has not yet been mentioned on the website of his production company Zentropa.

First feature film since 2018

Von Trier announced in the summer of 2022 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Despite the treatment, he continued working on the mini-horror series “Riget – Exodus”, the successor to the two “Hospital of Ghosts” seasons from the 1990s. The Dane’s ailing health had already been a topic of discussion before, and he himself had also spoken out about his health problems several times.

Von Trier presented his last feature film to date, the horror thriller “The House That Jack Built”, at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, where he had been declared persona non grata in 2011 due to controversial Nazi statements. It was only for the world premiere of “The House That Jack Built” that he was brought back to the festival after seven years.

There has been speculation in the film scene for some time about a new film by the director. In an interview with an Italian media outlet in July, Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård revealed that von Trier was on the mend and was initially working on a new film from home.
