Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey are “McBuff”: Does Buffy have to protect the blood banks at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital from vampires?
A vampire hunter and a star surgeon meet in a bar… What sounds like the beginning of an old man’s joke actually happened thanks to actress Sarah Michelle Gellar (47) and “Grey’s Anatomy” heartthrob Patrick Dempsey (58). Gellar posted and immediately joked: “The crossover you didn’t know you needed.” She added the hashtag “McBuff” – in reference to her TV role as demon hunter Buffy Summers and Dempsey’s signature role as Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd.
But what is really behind the joint photo? The answer is provided by a look at the current acting engagements of the two. Gellar and Dempsey are working together in the prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin”, which tells the story of the Showtime original with Michael C. Hall (53) in the title role. While Dempsey plays one of the main roles as head of the homicide squad, Gellar is said to be a recurring guest star playing a colleague from the Miami Metro Police Department.
What is “Original Sin” about?
The new crime series from the US streaming service Paramount+ is set in 1991, 15 years before the well-known events from “Dexter”. The prequel shows how the murderous Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson (29), adopts the code of conduct that he tries to adhere to in the original series. Under the guidance of his father Harry (Christian Slater, 55), the young Dexter learns to channel his bloodthirsty urge to murder towards those who he believes deserve to be removed from society: criminals, murderers or rapists who have so far managed to escape the law. In doing so, he must try not to attract the attention of law enforcement authorities – a particular challenge, as he is also beginning a forensic internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
In “Dexter: Original Sin,” Patrick Dempsey’s character Aaron Spencer has a decades-long friendship with Harry Morgan, the main character’s adoptive father and mentor. The first season of the new series, production of which began in Miami in June 2024, is scheduled to consist of ten episodes. In addition to the stars already mentioned, Molly Brown, James Martinez and singer Christina Milian are among those taking part.
Series takes place in the 90s
According to the series creators, when casting Dempsey, Slater and Gellar, they deliberately chose stars who were already famous in the 90s. Because the plot of the series takes place in that decade, the trio helped to capture the vibe of that time. At least in English, fans of the original series don’t have to do without Michael C. Hall – the original Dexter acts as the narrator in the prequel.
“Dexter: Original Sin” will premiere on Paramount+ on December 13th of this year.
