After seven years, Nelly Furtado is releasing a new album. It is the result of artistic rediscovery but at the same time a return to her musical roots.
Seven years after her last album, singer and songwriter Nelly Furtado is releasing her seventh studio album. On the record with the fitting title “7”, the Portuguese-Canadian singer focuses on her dance phase in a total of 14 songs. An important source of inspiration for the 2000s pop star was her now grown-up and eldest daughter, reports Furtado. She introduced her to the many DJ remix versions of her own hits.
The road back was long and not without hurdles. Parallel to the album announcement in July, Furtado reported on Instagram about her ADHD diagnosis, which she had made public some time earlier. “I’ve made 400 to 500 pieces of music in four years. My ADHD doesn’t always allow me to organize creations methodically, so it’s hard to explain how we chose 14 songs that magically rose to the top of the pile,” the singer wrote.
Inspiration from DJs
With her new album, Furtado, who made her breakthrough in 2000 at just 21 years old with the hit “I’m Like A Bird”, returns to her musical roots. “This collection of songs is very personal. It reflects my journey through heartbreak and rediscovering my confidence as an artist, to the pure joy and celebration that comes from pursuing your passion and being part of a community,” said the now 45-year-old.
The previously released single “Love Bites” already shows what is important to Furtado. The track is a sensual and energetic dance anthem and perfect for any DJ set. These were also what sparked Furtado’s inspiration. “DJs remixed my songs at concerts, in clubs and on social media, and I realized how much people love to dance and indulge in my music,” explained Furtdao.
Multiple songs with other artists
Songs like “Showstopper” and “Ready for Myself” also invite you to dance, while pieces like “All Comes Back”, “Better Than Ever” and especially “Untitled” also have quieter and more thoughtful tones on the record. Furtado fuses different musical styles such as R&B, pop, folk and danceable electronic music on the album. The pieces seem modern and timeless at the same time.
“My only intention with the songs was to give people something to get out of, let go of and escape to. I desperately need music every day. I desperately need songs that I can listen to every day. My brain doesn’t work at all without music,” says the singer. For her seventh album, Furtado also worked a lot with other musicians. The 14 songs include features with the South African rapper Blxckie, the Colombian band Bomba Estéreo and the Canadian singer-songwriter Charlotte Day Wilson.
