Innovation and technology in Argentine mining: the 10 keys to sustainability and efficiency

September 20, 2024 – 19:13

Innovation is a central axis to achieve modern mining, capable of generating social, economic and environmental value.

“Innovation is the soul of continuous improvement”. The phrase of Bill Gates It is a fundamental principle that transcends all industries and undoubtedly guides modern mining as well. At a global and local level, our sector today has an essential guiding principle: to build a safe, efficient and sustainable operation, it is not enough to follow the paths forged in the past. Constant investment in knowledge, cutting-edge technology and modern infrastructure is required. Without this commitment to innovation, long-term mining that provides real value to the environment in which it operates is not possible.

In this context, when discussing the key role that the sector could play in Argentina’s progress, we must know that Forward-looking mining must be supported by a solid foundation of innovation that enables safer, more productive and sustainable operations.

These are the 10 key points that mining is discussing today to understand the interweaving of innovation and sustainability in the sector:

  • Maintain investment in development and innovation: Without resources there is no innovation. Without innovation there is no sustainability. Investment is essential for a mining company to remain competitive and a leader in a sector as challenging as mining.
  • Incorporate cutting-edge technology: Equipment upgrades are a constant in this industry. This is what ensures that mining operations are efficient, safe and profitable, while reducing environmental impact.
  • Innovation impacts security: Equipping ourselves with advanced technologies minimizes operational risks and creates a safer working environment.
  • Process optimization: The implementation of modern technologies allows to increase operational efficiency, reduce downtime and maximize production capacity.
  • Technology improves compliance with regulations and standards:Continuous updating of equipment and technologies ensures that the latest safety and environmental regulations are met, allowing for uninterrupted operation.
  • Positive impact on local communities: Innovation not only improves operations, but also generates employment and promotes sustainable development in the areas of influence.
  • Predictive maintenance: Investing in advanced maintenance systems reduces unplanned downtime, improving operational efficiency and reducing costs.
  • Efficient use of natural resources: Investing in modern equipment allows for maximising the use of resources, reducing environmental impact and ensuring more sustainable development.
  • Preparing for the future: Investing in technology not only strengthens current operations, but also trains staff in the use of advanced tools, preparing the company for future challenges.
  • Sustainable growth and expansion of operations: With the right technology and infrastructure, it is possible to expand operations into new areas, ensuring long-term sustainable growth.

In NewmontAt Cerro Negro, we firmly believe that innovation is a central pillar to achieving modern mining, capable of generating social, economic and environmental value. This commitment is reflected in our operations in the Deseado Massif, in the province of Santa Cruz, where we operate the most important gold and silver deposit in the country. In 2024, we are investing almost 100 million pesos in technology and equipment to improve our operations in Cerro Negro. This investment includes the incorporation of heavy mine equipment (HME) that raises safety levels, increases productivity and improves the health and ergonomic conditions of our workers.

Among the new equipment we have acquired at Cerro Negro, the Sandvik DD 422i Jumbos stand out, offering greater precision in drilling development faces and featuring smart sensors that automatically deactivate power in risk zones. This type of technology not only increases operational safety, but also optimizes efficiency by reducing downtime.

Another example is the Sandvik DU412i ITH longhole equipment, designed to operate automatically during shift changes, maximising productivity and reducing the need for human presence in high-risk tasks. In addition, we have acquired auxiliary equipment such as motor graders and water trucks, which are essential for maintaining optimal conditions for ramps and accesses in underground mines.

For mining to become a driving force for development in Argentina, we must continue to invest in technologies that not only improve our efficiency and safety, but also ensure a positive impact on the communities where we operate.
