Drake Hogestyn (1953-2024), long-time star of the US series “Time of Longing,” died of pancreatic cancer shortly before his 71st birthday. The actor played the role of John Black in the popular soap opera for 38 years. His family announced his death on Instagram.

the statement was shared. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn,” it said. “He was faced with a huge challenge with the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, but he rose to the challenge with incredible strength and determination. After an incredible battle, he died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.” His family continued: “He was the greatest husband, father, dad and actor.” He loved performing for the series audience “and sharing the stage with the greatest cast, crew and production team in the industry.” The statement concluded with the words: “We love him and we will miss him in ‘Time of Longing’.” According to People, the actor died on September 28th – just one day before his 71st birthday.
Series colleagues remember Drake Hogestyn
Many colleagues from “Zeit der Sehnsucht” have already expressed their condolences publicly. “Drake was an incredible man,” wrote Alison Sweeney (48) on Instagram. “He was funny, generous and thoughtful. He cared about every scene, every person.” She will “miss him terribly and cherish every story, every joke and every hug.” Christopher Sean, 38, who played John’s illegitimate son Paul Narita, wrote a touching tribute on more than just my TV dad, in my eyes you were my dad, thank you for everything you taught me and the love you gave me. I miss and love you so much. Drake. Rest in peace, Dad.”
Drake Hogestyn was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and initially pursued a career as a professional baseball player. He even signed with the New York Yankees and played for one of their farm teams until he was injured in 1977. His first major role was in the CBS series “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” in the early 1980s. In 1986’s “Time of Desire” he first appeared as a mysterious character called “The Pawn” before becoming a fan favorite as John Black. He took a short break from 2009 to 2011 before returning. He didn’t just stay connected to the series for many years: he had been married to his childhood sweetheart Victoria Post since 1986. They had four children and have seven grandchildren.
