Poverty in CABA increased to 32.1% in the second quarter and already affects almost a million Buenos Aires residents

The poverty reached 989,000 Buenos Aires (32.1% of the total)of which 417,000 (13.5%) are found in destitution situation during the second quarter of 2024as reported by the Institute of Statistics and Censuses of the City of Buenos Aires (IDECBA).

This way, poverty was 5.1 percentage points (pp) above from the same period of the previous year when it affected the 27% of the Buenos Aires population. That is, there are currently some 159,000 people in poverty. Meanwhile, poverty increased 3.3 pp (+102,000 people), compared to the same period in 2023, when it stood at 10.2%.

However, in relation to the first quarter of 2024, a decrease in poverty and indigence was observed: about 54,000 people left this condition.

Poverty and indigence in CABA: they reached maximum values ​​since the pandemic

The incidence of poverty and indigence on the population is the second highest in the historical series that began in 2015 for a second quarter, only surpassed by the record of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

The expansion of labor and non-labor income is insufficient to offset price increases. Consequently, the living conditions of the City’s households deteriorate across the board, affecting access to basic baskets and reducing the weight of the middle and wealthy sectors,” the report states.

The poverty data in the City of Buenos Aires is known after the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) reported last week that Poverty reached 52.9% of Argentineswhile the destitution affected the 18.1%. Extrapolated to the total population, this implied that some 24.8 million of Argentines are in conditions of povertywhile another 8.5 million are destitute. The report also highlights that two thirds of children and adolescents are poor (66.1% of the total).

45.4% of children and adolescentsfrom 0 to 17 years old, reside in households in poverty in the City of Buenos Aires. About 304,000 people are in that age group. A year ago, the percentage was 39.6%.

The households hardest hit by poverty were those headed by women (31% compared to 21.5% with a male boss); by an unemployed person (2.6 times higher than the total incidence) or by a person who is dedicated to domestic service (61.1%).

In addition, homes that are located in the South zone They have greater poverty than the average (42.4%)just like those who have boys and girls under 14 years of age (39.9%)the latter with incidences of poverty and destitution increasing with the number of boys and girls in the home.

Households with the presence of older adults who are in poverty are located at 26.4%, a value close to that of the total population.
