Madonna’s brother, Christopher Ciccone, has died at the age of 63. The “Queen of Pop” is now saying goodbye on Instagram.
In an emotional Instagram post, singer Madonna said goodbye to her younger brother, Christopher Ciccone (1960-2024). He died of cancer on Friday, October 4 at the age of 63, according to a family spokesman. Christopher “Chris” Gerard Ciccone was a “visionary” for the “Queen of Pop” who danced by her side “through the madness” of life, as the singer wrote on Instagram. Madonna’s older brother Anthony Ciccone (1934-2024) only died in February 2023 at the age of 66.
Siblings went to New York together
“He was the closest person to me for so long,” Madonna said in her Instagram post, which shows several photos of the singer with her younger brother. The siblings, who grew up in a conservative small town, bonded over a shared passion for dance, which was “a kind of super glue” and saved the singer and her homosexual brother, Madonna continued. “We took each other by the hand and danced through the madness of our childhood.”
Ciccone also followed his sister to New York at the beginning of her career, where they “devoured art, music and films like hungry animals” and “danced through the madness of the AIDS epidemic” together, as the singer further revealed. There, Ciccone ultimately worked at Madonna’s side as a personal assistant, dancer, decorator and tour manager before later working as a shoe designer and interior designer. Her younger brother was a “painter, poet and visionary”.
Madonna and Ciccone had no contact for several years
The relationship between Madonna and Ciccone was complicated at times. In the early 2000s, the “Queen of Pop” fired her younger brother as tour manager, who was suffering from alcohol and drug abuse. In 2008, Ciccone published his tell-all book “Life With My Sister Madonna,” which only further strained the siblings’ strained relationship. It was only in 2012 that Ciccone revealed in an interview that he was in contact with his sister and that they were “on a completely friendly level.”
Her brother’s cancer has brought the siblings together again, the singer said on Instagram. So at the end they “held hands again, closed their eyes and danced”. Ciccone is survived by his husband, British actor Ray Thacker.
