Cathy Hummels looked back on her marriage to Mats Hummels in a talk format and also talked about the dark sides.
Cathy Hummels (36) spoke openly about her failed marriage to Mats Hummels (35) in an interview with Pierre M. Krause (48) in the issue “With or without you – Overnight with Cathy Hummels”. The influencer and the professional footballer were married from 2015 to 2022 and have a son together.
“I’m very happy with my life, I also lead a privileged life, but I’m 35 now, I’m divorced, I’m more or less a single parent,” explains Hummels about her current life situation. “It’s not like that was my dream at 25. As an outsider, you often don’t see the dark side.”
She used to love her ex-husband very much, “but I was still just his wife, no one knew my name, I was very demoted,” she looks back. It was difficult that her husband at the time was a world star “and then supermodels write, you have to be very self-confident and say: Okay, I’m someone too, I can keep up with them.” That’s why it was so important to her to “build my own thing. I always thought: Maybe he’ll replace you at some point.”
“He is always important in my life”
“When Mats became more well-known and prominent, I asked myself: What does he actually want with you?” Today she has self-confidence, “but no longer has a man,” explains Hummels with a laugh. Afterwards she becomes serious again and says: “It was also a reason for my depression. I destroyed myself and always made myself small. That wasn’t necessarily because of Mats. It’s always a matter of perception. Of course If he could have done things better and said things to me differently, then maybe they would have been received differently. Or maybe he just shouldn’t have said certain things.” Due to an underactive thyroid, she “gained a lot of weight for a while. And it was just that I misperceived a lot of the things he said, in his opinion.”
The two were a couple for thirteen and a half years. “I was 19 at the time and he was 18. That’s why I had to chew on it for so long after the breakup. I realized that no matter where I was, all my memories were always with him. […] I have to make new memories now.” Today the two are “okay” with each other. “He is always important in my life because he is my child’s dad and we really had a nice time.”
