Leopoldo Lucas, a missionary born in Puerto Iguazú, since 2015 has been in charge of the Iguazú Tourism Mixed Entity (ITUREM)is the one who makes public actions compatible with the private sector, in order to unify and enhance promotional actions. The clear example was the #Iguazútodoelaño stand that they presented at the last Tourism Fair.
When asked if it is possible to make growth compatible with sustainability, Lucas answers, “Iguazú is committed to promoting sustainable tourism practices and conserving its natural environment. Environmental education programs and responsible tourism practices have been implemented to reduce the impact on the ecosystem. Iguazu Falls, which are a natural wonder of the world, are part of a protected National Park, which ensures that tourists can enjoy its beauty without damaging the environment. In addition, the destination strives to reduce plastic consumption and promote recycling in hotels and other tourist establishments that, since this initiative, have already obtained important certifications such as Greener Hotels, Preferred By Nature and, currently, we are in the process of “I work with Biosphere for the conversion of a comprehensive sustainable destination.”
“Regarding the participation of the Private Sector, they are the ones who also have an active role in this sustainable mission, with hotels and tour operators that have implemented ecological measures. Many hotels have adopted energy and water saving practices, as well as supporting local communities through fair trade initiatives and hiring local staff. Tourism companies have also begun to offer eco-friendly experiences, such as guided tours with less environmental impact and activities that raise awareness about the importance of the region’s biodiversity. Added to this, the commitment to obtain eco-labels that position the hotel industry as leaders in the different metasearch engines,” states the official.
“Iguazú attracts tourists from all over the world for its impressive Falls, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In addition to its natural beauty, it offers an immersive jungle experience, with amazing biodiversity and a wide variety of activities, such as hiking, boat rides, and wildlife observation tours. The combination of a unique natural environment and a focus on sustainability make Iguazú an irresistible destination for those seeking adventures in contact with nature. Added to this, the diversity and gastronomic quality that has grown a lot in recent times, and the quality hospitality transforms us into a friendly destination for families, groups, individuals, couples arriving from Misiones, Argentina and the World.
Connectivity, a challenge to continue growing
Iguazú’s strategic location on the border between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay gives it excellent air connectivity. “The Iguazú Falls International Airport facilitates the arrival of tourists from different important cities in the country and neighboring countries, which increases accessibility to the destination, which perfectly complements that offered by our neighboring city in Brazil (Foz do Iguaçu), facilitating the influx of visitors from all over the region and the world, and that is where we aim to increase Meeting Tourism, with the infrastructure we have and we will also soon have a Convention Center that will be able to receive almost 10 thousand attendees, helping to consolidate Iguazú as a key tourist destination in geographical location; We are working and we dream so that our Destination, in the not too distant future, will be “the gateway” for international tourists to Argentina and the region,” he concluded.
