More than a week from power outage that affected some 500,000 users, the distributor Edesur has not yet provided clear explanations of the causes of the massive outage. In addition, warning lights are already beginning to come on for the summer, given that it is a company that in times of high demand cannot guarantee service and power outages are recurring. The union that brings together the workers has been denouncing a lack of investment by the company that has a concession in the southern area of Greater Buenos Aires and part of CABA.
The mega blackout would have been due to a failure in the generation that affected the networks of power distribution, which It was recorded last Thursday, 3 a.m. at 7 a.m. in the southern neighborhoods of the city of Buenos Aires and some nearby towns in the Buenos Aires suburbs. By 8:30 the service had completely returned to normal.
According to what was known, the problem began in the generation segment, with the unexpected departure and surprise 450 MW of the systemwhich later led to problems for the distribution sector.
The data collected minute by minute Cammesa indicated that at 7 o’clock the national interconnected system was operating with 14,117 MW, but a few minutes later the demand fell to 13,666 MW. Only in Greater Buenos Aires, Generation plummeted from 3,896 MW at 7:10 a.m. to 2,784 MW at 7:40 a.m.
Officially, no fire or accident that affected the network was reported. It was talked about an incident in the Central Costanera. For its part, Edesur disassociated itself and said that it was an issue beyond the company’s control.
Who and what neighborhoods were affected by the power outage?
For the multiple power outages For a few minutes the subway network did not work, the traffic lights were interrupted and there were small traffic contingencies at a time when thousands of people took to the streets heading to their jobs or places of study.
Power outages occurred in Villa Crespo, Caballito, Almagro, Mataderos, Liniers, Constitución, Barracas, La Bocabut also in the Buenos Aires towns of Wilde, Avellaneda, Quilmes, Gerli, Lanús, Dock Sudamong others.
What did Edesur say about the blackout?
The electrical distribution company reported that due to “unexplained causes” a failure occurred in the generation sector and several substations under its control were affected, causing power outages.
“The service is gradually being normalized”they maintained from Edesur to this medium. Finally, at 8:30 it was confirmed that all users recovered electricity.
What did the Ministry of Energy say about the electricity outage?
Through an official statement, the Secretary of Energy of the Nation assured that the incident occurred at 7:12 in the Coastal Centralaffecting more than 500,000 users.
An hour later, service was restored. 82% (410,000 users)leaving a remnant of 90,000 users to whom service was restored at 8:30, according to the company Edesur.
“It is important to clarify that the cuts did not occur due to a peak in demand, but rather due to an operational problem linked to generation that affected 17 substations that feed the supply of the Edesur concession area.”said the Secretariat of Eduardo Rodríguez Chirillo.
“We highlight the speed with which work was done to recover generation and restore service to all affected users,” he added.
The National Electricity Regulatory Entity (ENRE) confirmed that at 07:12 there was a failure in the Coastal Central at the moment that one of the machines was in the synchronization process to enter service.
“This failure caused the activation of its generation protections, and consequently the outage of service of 16 electrical substations in the Edesur concession area, affecting a total of 530,000 users”he detailed.
According to the ENRE, the event affected the electrical supply of the agency’s offices, and compromised the operation of the servers. “This prevented the updating of information on the number of users without service in the AMBA,” they clarified.
Edesur, an eternal problem for users
For years, Edesur has been a headache for users who are under this concession and who have no choice but to deal with repeated power outages, with the economic consequences that this entails.
It is suffered by homes where food spoils due to the lack of electricity for the ice cream makers, and businesses that must close or resort to a generator to remain open.
In dialogue with El Diario Sur, Jorge Torres, general secretary of the Luz y Fuerza union delegation that covers the districts of Lomas, Brown, Esteban Echeverría, Ezeiza, Presidente Perón and San Vicente, stated that “the entire concession area of Edesur was getting worse over time. Lack of maintenance, network repowering, and investments in overhead and underground lines. Rates increase, but that is not reflected in the network.”
He also recalled that the last ENRE report was “lapidary.” “Everything indicates that this summer we are going to be complicated,” he said.
As if it were, Torres assured that in recent times Edesur’s technical staff has been decreasing despite the increase in users, which means that the company is not prepared to meet the demand and problems in its territory of competition.
