Charlotte Roche surprisingly returned on Saturday after a long break. Will we see and hear more from her in the future?
She was missing – that’s what her 162,000 followers commented on the comeback post of cult presenter and scandal author Charlotte Roche (46). With a harmless “Well, how are you today?” The British-German artist published the first sign of life on her account after four and a half years of radio silence.
In the photo she looks quite different: turquoise and pink highlights have been dyed into her bleached hair. On one eye it says “RIP” and an illegible name. It is unclear whether it was written with a pen or tattooed. Born in High Wycombe, England, the mother of one smiles for the camera.
Charlotte Roche even responds kindly to some of her fans’ comments on the post. But she still didn’t have an answer: Will she soon be in the spotlight again?
What does she do next?
It is conceivable that we will see more of Charlotte Roche again soon, after all, she has a great, or rather many great, career behind her.
She first made a name for herself in the 00s as an unconventional presenter on the music television channels Viva Zwei and Viva. She was awarded the Grimme Prize and the Bavarian Television Prize for her moderation work. She was also nominated for a Grimme Prize “for her competent yet unique moderation style”. She also moderated “Charlotte Roche meets…” (ProSieben), the music magazine “Tracks” (Arte), a Berlinale opening show, and from 2009 to 2010 with Giovanni di Lorenzo (65) the Radio Bremen talk show “3 nach 9 ” and from 2012 to 2013 the talk show “Roche & Böhmermann” (ZDFkultur) with Jan Böhmermann (43).
What most of these formats have in common is that they were soon discontinued or the collaboration ended, but Charlotte Roche’s cult status was not affected by this. This may also be because she had a lot of irons in the fire and other cult artists such as Christoph Maria Herbst (58), Heinz Strunk (62) and Rocko Schamoni (58) were hoping to work with her. These included, among other things, appearances in music videos, on reading tours, as an audio book speaker, guest musician or a supporting role in a horror film.
Charlotte Roche probably celebrated her greatest success with the provocative, “70 percent autobiographical” novel “Wetlands”, which was published in 2008, became a bestseller and was made into a film in 2013 with Carla Juri (39) in the lead role. Roche’s second novel, “Schoßgebete”, followed in 2011, which was not quite as successful.
At the beginning of the big podcast wave, Charlotte Roche and her husband (since 2007), Brainpool co-founder Martin Keß, also devoted themselves to this medium. 45 episodes of her weekly podcast “Couple Diology” were published from 2019 to 2020. They won the German Prize 2020 in the “best talk team” and “best newcomer” categories.
She could build on all of these successes.
Private dramas
What caused Charlotte Roche to say “RIP” on her face is unclear. But the fact is that she has had to cope with brutal experiences. In her fateful year of 2001, she and Eric Pfeil (born 1969), producer and father of her daughter Polly, wanted to get married. But on the way to the wedding in London at the end of June, the vehicle carrying her mother and three brothers crashed – the men did not survive the accident and her mother was seriously injured.
“I had to struggle with that for years,” . You ask yourself why you survived your fate and why your brothers died far too early. “These thoughts ruin everything good for years.” After years she stopped her therapy. “I think that whatever happens to me in the future can’t be as bad as it was back then,” she told the magazine.
