The German Animal Welfare Association has filed a complaint against the celebrity chef Frank Rosin. Viewers of his show drew attention to the fact that crayfish had been processed for a dish in a way that violated animal welfare.
Animal cruelty at prime time on Sat 1? A harsh accusation that the German Animal Welfare Association (DTB) is now making loud. In the show “Who cooks the best for the guests?” Chefs Frank Rosin and Cornelia Poletto competed against each other in the broadcast on August 21st. The cooking started under the motto “Wild Freedom”. The 58-year-old chose the starter “salmon roulade with crayfish bouillabaisse and celery puree”.
But keen onlookers noticed that the crabs were struggling for their lives as Rosin threw them into a pot of hot fat. At least one was still alive and minutes later, when the still alive bouillabaisse was stirred again, something moved. According to Section 18 Paragraph 2 of the Animal Protection Act, this type of killing is not permitted: “The killing of crustaceans by frying is lengthy and painful and is therefore expressly prohibited by law,” says the DTB. The legislature has recognized the sensitivity of crustaceans to pain, so only killing them in boiling water with prior anesthesia is permitted.
The German Animal Welfare Association filed a complaint and explains its decision: “Eating crabs is legally considered a ‘reasonable reason’ for killing, but only if the correct, i.e. proportionate, method of killing is used,” explains Evelyn Ofensberger, head of the legal department at the German Animal Welfare Association . Does Frank Rosin lack knowledge about crayfish?
In addition, the DTB published rather unknown facts about the behavior of a crayfish that make you shudder when you see Rosin’s pot around minute 18 on the Sat.1 and ProSieben streaming platform “Joyn”. One or two cancers are still moving, but those that no longer give anything away are by no means dead. “Since pain can cause the crabs to become rigid, observers can get the wrong impression that animals in the pot are already dead,” says the animal welfare organization. It is possible that the crabs suffered a death struggle that lasted several minutes.
But that’s not enough. According to the DTB, the storage of the crayfish before and after use is also improper. In its statement, the Animal Welfare Association writes: “Rosin could be seen transporting the crayfish in a glass bowl without water from the pantry to the kitchen in the broadcast studio. He put unused live specimens aside in the waterless bowl on the kitchen worktop.”
Crabs are smarter and more sensitive than is usually assumed: “Even if pain and stress are less easy to recognize in aquatic animals, the sensitivity of decapods has now been scientifically proven,” explains Katrin Pichl, wildlife specialist at the German Animal Welfare Association. “They exhibit complex behavior, have a certain level of consciousness and have considerable learning ability.”
The star chef has not yet commented on the allegations.
