The exceptional athlete Chris Hoy (48) has announced that he is suffering from terminal cancer. The former Scottish track cyclist, who won six Olympic gold medals and eleven world championship titles during his career, only has two to four years left to live.
Hoy suffers from prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. Hoy had known for a good year that his illness was no longer curable – apparently even when he made his cancer public in February. that he was receiving chemotherapy, which fortunately was working well.
“That’s just the way things go”
As unnatural as it feels, it’s the nature of things, he now says: “You know, we’re all born and we all die, and that’s just the way things go.” You think to yourself whether you’re lucky that there are medications that can delay the whole thing for as long as possible. “Hand on heart, I’m pretty positive most of the time and I’m really happy,” he says. “This is bigger than the Olympics. It’s bigger than anything. It’s about appreciating life and finding joy.”
