When it comes to raising children, Eva Mendes and husband Ryan Gosling have taken a relaxed approach. She relies on “conscious parenting”, which means relying less on rules and more on a good parent-child relationship. But Mendes and Gosling are strict about one thing. Her daughters Esmeralda and Amada (ten and eight years old) are not allowed to use smartphones or log in to any social networks.

In an interview with the British Sunday Times, Mendes makes a comparison that other parents may also be able to understand. Letting her children go online “for me is like telling her, ‘Oh, just go out on the street in the middle of the night. Nothing will happen to you,'” Mendes explains. “I know that sounds extreme, but that’s how I feel,” she says.

The 50-year-old also talks about her fear of doing something wrong in her upbringing. “I still have all these fears and I see that I’m passing them on to my children,” explains the actress and children’s author. It is important to her to tell her daughters why they are so privileged and to teach them to properly appreciate their privileges. “I explain to them what I didn’t have, what Ryan didn’t have when he was little, how hard we had to fight, the dark days of living paycheck to paycheck, and this and that, but they never will really know if they don’t experience it themselves,” explains Mendes.
She always wanted to be financially independent
She learned early on from her own mother to be financially independent as a woman and to stand on her own two feet. Values that she wants to pass on. And so she tries to show her daughters that working is “cool”. She is also careful not to talk negatively about her body, weight or age in front of them.
