Teri Garr was undiagnosed with MS for 20 years
According to her own statements, Teri Garr has been battling multiple sclerosis (MS) for around four decades. She made her illness public in 2002; it had only been diagnosed a few years earlier. “I think everyone is shocked and frightened when they hear something like that,” she told the station at the time. She saw eleven doctors before she got the diagnosis.
“MS is an insidious disease,” Garr wrote in her memoir “Speedbumps: Flooring It Through Hollywood,” according to the magazine. “Like some of my friends have [MS] the tendency to appear and then disappear at the most inconvenient times. It took more than 20 years for doctors to figure out what was going on. Sometimes they mentioned MS, but all the tests showed nothing.” Then the symptoms always disappeared.
Since the beginning of the 1960s, the actress has appeared in numerous TV and cinema productions – including as a dancer in six films by Elvis Presley (1935-1977). Garr was probably best known for the comedy “Tootsie”. For the role of Sandy alongside Dustin Hoffman (87), Jessica Lange (75) and Bill Murray (74), among others, Garr was nominated for an Oscar for “Best Supporting Actress”. She also had roles in “Frankenstein Junior”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, “Prêt-à-Porter” and a few “Friends” episodes.
