A great honor for Die Toten Hosen: The Düsseldorf punk rock band around singer Campino (62) has received the most important award in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the State Prize. In their hometown, Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (49) presented the rockers with the award on Wednesday (October 30th) and acknowledged the band’s formative influence on society and culture.
“Belonging to the cultural history of the country”
“The Toten Hosen are already part of the country’s cultural history,” said Wüst. “Their music is moving because it talks about life. About hopes, about failure and, above all, about getting back up again.” The CDU politician also emphasized that the band has been inspiring millions of people across generations and all social differences for more than four decades.
The Prime Minister also praised the political and social commitment of the band, which was founded in 1982. The Toten Hosen have always been loud in every respect: “Against xenophobia, against anti-Semitism, against right-wing extremist violence.”
Hendrik Wüst posts selfie with the Toten Hosen
“A band that is committed with their music, with words and just as much with actions – for solidarity, cohesion and human dignity,” Wüst also wrote about a selfie with the rockers. “They make our country a better place. And for that they deserve our country’s highest award!”
The group around frontman Campino was founded in Düsseldorf in 1982 and emerged from the punk movement. The band is one of the most commercially successful German music groups with roots in punk rock. In addition to Campino, the current line-up includes drummer Vom Ritchie (60), bassist Andreas Meurer (62) and guitarists Andreas von Holst (60) and Michael Breitkopf (60).
Die Toten Hosen repeatedly show great social commitment. Most recently, they collected millions in donations for the victims of the severe earthquake in Turkey and Syria in February 2023 with a benefit concert.
