How would the tragic love story of “Romeo and Juliet” continue if Juliet decided to live? The Broadway musical “& Julia” in Hamburg provides an answer to this.
The Broadway musical “& Julia” celebrated an acclaimed German premiere on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn. In the evening, the audience in the operetta house gave enthusiastic applause for the actors and the creative team.
The jukebox musical with the greatest hits from Britney Spears, Katy Perry and the Backstreet Boys, among others, shows a new interpretation of Shakespeare’s great romantic drama. It tells what would have happened if Julia had chosen life. Among the premiere guests were Tokio Hotel singer Bill Kaulitz, Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough and the Swedish music producer Max Martin.
The musical thrives on its fast pace and stirring songs from the 1990s and 2000s. Chiara Fuhrmann is a bright Julia who is bursting with joy for life. Instead of following her Romeo to death, she takes her life into her own hands and goes on an adventurous journey to Paris.
There she meets Francois (Oliver Edward), who falls in love with her non-binary friend May (Bram Tahamata). While William Shakespeare (Andreas Bongard) and his wife Anne Hathaway (Willemijn Verkaik) are still discussing how the story should continue, Romeo (Raphael Groß) suddenly appears again and tries to win Juliet back.
