Trump also won as president in the state of Florida, where a Republican had not won since the late 1980s. In addition, the state voted against abortion.

A Republican had not won the presidential election in that state since the 1980s.

After a clear victory in the United States presidential elections, Republican Donald Trump achieved an unexpected victory in Miami-Dade, Florida. This county, historically dominated by Democrats, gave Trump a significant advantage over Kamala Harris. It is the first Republican victory since 1988, in which voters also rejected a referendum on abortion rights.

The last victorious Republican candidate in Miami-Dade George H. W. Bush, while the democrat Hillary Clinton won the county in 2016, by 30 points. The last victorious Democrat was Joe Biden in 2020, seven points ahead of Trump.

Elections 2024: the Republican victory in Florida

In these elections, Trump beat Harris by 11 points, with the 80% of votes counted, which generated surprise and concern in the Democratic Party. Miami-Dade was once a bastion of Democratic votes, with many voters moving from the city of New York and other areas of the northeast.

The state of Floridaonce considered to have no clear political leaning, has changed in recent years. The resounding victory of Republican Governor Ron DeSantis in 2022 in Miami-Dade is a reflection of these changes. Besides, the growing Latino population in the state, especially migrants from Venezuelastrengthened the Republican Party, something similar to previous generations with the Cuban exiles.

Latino voters used to support Democrats in the 2008 and 2012 elections, but began to shift to the right. Currently, Latinos make up about 68% of the population in this county.

The Democratic challenge to attract new support

The Democratic Party has faced both financial and political challenges in attracting new candidates. Democrats assumed that new generations of Cuban-Americans they would automatically lean towards their rankswhich was not fulfilled.

The last time Florida went for a Democratic presidential candidate was more than a decade ago, when Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney by less than one percentage point.

Florida rejected expanding the right to abortion

In the state of Florida, a citizen referendum rejected extending the right to abortion up to 24 weeks of gestation. This result represents a victory for Governor DeSantis and the anti-abortion movement since the Supreme Court overturned the ruling of Roe v. Wade in 2022.

This means that each state will decide its legislation on this matter. Trump said in April that would not sign a federal ban on abortion and that he was “analyzing it” when asked if he supported restrictions on contraceptives.
