The Cathedral of La Plata is filled with light and its bell tower with music again

On Friday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m., the Cathedral will shine again and its bells will ring again thanks to a project promoted jointly by the Province of Buenos Aires, the Municipality of La Plata, the Cathedral Foundation, the Archbishopric of La Plata and Edelap.

With a symphonic show of Nicolás Sorinfree and open to the community, new efficient exterior lighting will be inaugurated, along with a computer system that will put its bell tower into operation again.

The project promoted by the local energy distributor, called “Lúmina: light, heritage and identity”aims to highlight buildings, monuments and public spaces that are part of La Plata’s heritage.

Enhancement of the Cathedral of La Plata

Currently, the Cathedral of La Plata only has general exterior lighting over its entire perimeter without differentiating any constructive or symbolic aspect that allows recognition of all its architectural and linguistic wealth.

In this sense, the materialization of a comprehensive project that focuses attention on the Enhancement of the Cathedral Temple with a night viewwhich can be recognized from a distance, from any point in the city, and which promotes the enhancement of the lines typical of the neo-Gothic style.

Regarding the bell tower, its automation system had stopped working in December 2016 due to an atmospheric discharge that caused all of the recorded melodies to be erased.

The current enhancement project was led by two experts in the preservation of historical monuments, Teresa de Anchorena and Fabio Grementieri, together with the Infrastructure commission of the Cathedral Foundation, Edelap and local suppliers.

It involved the comprehensive renovation of the external electrical installation and the placement of 210 efficient LED reflectors. Also the recovery of the operation of the electropercussions that operate the 25 bells that make up the symphonic bell tower, capable of playing dozens of melodies.

The event will take place on November 15.

“We have recovered the beauty and splendor at night of our beloved Cathedral, the largest neo-Gothic temple in South America and an emblematic building of our city that makes us proud for its unique characteristics,” highlighted Mayor Julio Alak, and added: “ “La Plata is an exceptional city and we are working to recover its enormous heritage.”

It should be noted that during the inaugural show, the musician and composer Nicolás Sorín will perform the Antártica Symphonya work inspired by his experiences on the white continent and committed to environmental preservation. After the show, the new lighting system will be turned on for the first time next to that of the bell tower, to once again see the Cathedral full of light and music.
