Prosecutors have charged three men following Liam Payne’s death. One of them is said to be a friend of the singer – and comments on the allegations.
The tragic death of former One Direction singer Liam Payne caused horror around the world in mid-October. The 31-year-old fell from the balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Investigators do not believe it was a suicide. A “conscious act” by the singer can be ruled out; he was not fully conscious due to his drug consumption, the public prosecutor said. Forensic examinations found traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s body.
Prosecutors have charged three men in connection with his death. One of them is said to have been the Argentine businessman Rogelio Nores – a friend and constant companion of Payne in Buenos Aires. Nores is accused of abandoning Payne in a helpless situation and thus becoming complicit. According to prosecutors, he could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Nores has now denied being involved in the investigation. The day after Payne’s death, he “testified as a witness before the prosecutor and has not spoken to any police officers or prosecutors since then.” He denies any blame for the singer’s death. “I never let Liam down, I went to his hotel three times that day and left 40 minutes before it happened. There were over 15 people in the hotel lobby chatting and joking with him when I “I could never have imagined that something like this would happen,” the Argentine told the British newspaper Daily Mail. Nores denied reports that he also worked for Liam Payne. “I wasn’t Liam’s manager, he was just my very good friend. This tragedy really breaks my heart and I miss my friend every day,” he said.
Liam Payne is to be buried in his hometown
The second defendant is a hotel employee. He is accused of supplying Payne with cocaine in two cases. The public prosecutor’s office did not comment on the identity of the third defendant. According to media reports, it is said to be a cleaner who worked at the hotel.
Liam Payne’s body was handed over to Payne’s father last weekend with the permission of the judiciary. She has since been transferred to London, according to the Argentine newspaper Clarin. The funeral is scheduled to take place next day in Payne’s hometown of Wolverhampton.
