Argentine Trains implemented a Locker system for backpacks and bags in the bathrooms from the Retiro station, seeking to reduce vandalism and theft of objects in the toilets.
This measure, which forces passengers to leave their belongings in lockers with padlock provided by security personnel, generated controversy.
Although some support the initiative, many users complain about long lines and delays during peak hours, since there are only 16 lockers available.
The company explained that the decision was motivated by frequent incidents of theft and vandalism in bathrooms, including the theft of toilet lids and faucets.
In Retiro they put new lockers and the measure generated controversy: they do not allow backpacks or bags to enter the bathrooms
“Last week they inaugurated the women’s bathroom and They began to steal the toilet lids, parts of the mirrors, faucets, complete toilets,” explained the chronicler Bernardo Maniago in Argentine Mornings by C5N.
Although some people agreed with the measure, the journalist added that “the issue is during peak hours, when there are many people, because long lines form to access the bathroom. People complain because they say that it takes time, that it is a procedure to leave the backpack, go to the bathroom and come back.”
“There is also a legal discussion about whether this is in accordance with the law or not. What Trenes Argentinos says is yes, because they have the power to care for public assets and can make this determination,” he concluded.
Despite the discomfort for passengers, Argentine Trains maintains that the measure is legal and is part of its efforts to protect public assets. For the moment, this action will only be implemented in Retiro, the station most affected by criminal acts.
