Dave Coulier is suffering from lymphatic cancer. At first he thought he had a cold. He received a touching promise from “Full House” colleague John Stamos.
It started innocently enough, Dave Coulier told People. When the comedian, best known for the 90s sitcom “Full House,” suffered from a respiratory illness, his lymph glands swelled. And they kept growing in one place. Then came the diagnosis: stage three cancer.
“I went from a mild cold to ‘I have cancer,’ which was a little overwhelming,” the 65-year-old tells the magazine about how he learned of the diagnosis in October: stage three non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The type of cancer known colloquially as lymph gland cancer is a disease of the immune system. Coulier suffers from the B variant, in which the B memory cells are affected. By the time his doctor ordered a biopsy, one of his lymph nodes had already swollen to the size of a golf ball.
Dave Coulier: Stage three cancer
“The whole thing is going to be a pretty fast roller coaster ride,” says Coulier, describing the experience. After the initial shock, a treatment plan was quickly drawn up together with his family and the doctors. A ray of hope quickly came: the bone marrow examination showed no infection. “My chance of recovery went from low to over 90 percent, so that was a great day,” he remembers.
Just two weeks after the initial diagnosis, he began chemotherapy and shaved his head. “I wanted to tackle it head-on, let people know that this is part of my life,” he explains the decision. “I’m not going to try to hide it. I’d rather talk about it, open a debate and inspire people.”
He draws his own inspiration from his family history: both his mother and his sister died of breast cancer. “I saw what the women in my family were going through. I thought to myself: If I have just a tenth of their strength, I’ll be fine.” The fact that he and his wife Melissa are expecting their son Luc’s first grandchild fuels this will to live even further.
Moving message from the “Full House” colleague
His former “Full House” colleague and long-time friend John Stamos (“Emergency Room”) dedicated a moving Instagram post to Coulier after the illness was announced. “My brother since day 1,” he wrote alongside a whole series of pictures of the two of them. “I love you, Dave. I’ll be with you all the way,” he promised. The pictures show the two of them in the most intimate moments, fooling around, cuddling, and helping each other shave.
Melissa Coulier says she is moved by the post. “I love you PP,” she replies to the post with a pet name. “Thank you for your daily support and love.”
Coulier and Stamos met through “Full House.” Together with the third lead, Bob Saget, she had a close friendship until Saget died unexpectedly in a hotel room in January 2022 under circumstances that were never fully clarified.
