Hummed out: Greens delete Habeck video after Grönemeyer’s power word

Robert Habeck announced his application for the Green Party’s candidacy for chancellor in a video a week ago. Now the much discussed short video is no longer online.

Following objections from music star Herbert Grönemeyer, the Greens have removed a video by Robert Habeck from the internet. A corresponding post on X was deleted, and the video could no longer be seen on Habeck’s Instagram account. In it on Thursday last week, Habeck indicated his application for the Green Party’s candidacy for chancellor, which took place a day later. He hummed Grönemeyer’s hit “Time for something to turn around”.

Grönemeyer then banned the Greens, like the CDU before them, from using his song for the election campaign. Grönemeyer’s media lawyer Christian Schertz told the DPA news agency: “Today we also asked the Alliance 90/The Greens party and Mr. Habeck to refrain from publishing songs by Herbert Grönemeyer in the future, and specifically the song ‘Time for something to turn’ to use it for election campaign purposes.”

His client has a clear stance on this and “fundamentally does not want his person or his songs to be used by political parties for any kind of election advertising, especially without his consent.”

The Greens initially did not react and the video remained online. A week later that is no longer the case. “Herbert Grönemeyer has stated that his works should not be used by parties in principle. Not even through sums. We respect that,” said a spokesman in response to a DPA request.

A Green party conference will decide this Sunday about Habeck’s election as candidate for chancellor. It can be assumed that he will be nominated. Habeck is considered a proven real politician within the Greens. He focuses on the party’s ability to form alliances in the political center. “I would like to be held responsible – for Germany, for my party, for the project, for democracy,” he said in a podcast in August.
