In an interview, Vanessa Mai reveals why she is releasing a German version of Sia’s hit “Snowman” and why she loves Christmas so much.
Vanessa Mai (32) presents a Christmas single at the end of her musical year. The singer took on the hit “Snowman” by Australian singer Sia (48), which was released in 2017. “There are many German versions of various Christmas songs, but ‘Snowman’ hasn’t existed yet,” says Mai in an interview with spot on news about her single “Schneemann”, which is available from November 15th. “And it fits perfectly in German, which isn’t always the case.”
In addition to the classic “Last Christmas,” which turns 40 this year, her favorite Christmas hits include “One more sleep,” “Underneath the tree,” “A nonsense Christmas,” “Driving Home for Christmas” and “Santa “can’t you hear me,” as she says.
Special Christmas time as a child
The singer is considered an absolute Christmas fan. But where does this passion come from? “I think it’s because we really relax and feel like we can be proud of ourselves because we’ve done so much in the year. The family comes together. The Christmas decorations relax me, as do the films and series Christmas,” she explains.
She also has “only good” childhood memories of past Christmases, says the musician. “My parents always gave me the best celebrations. I especially liked when my dad played gigs and we were there. That was always great because everyone was dressed festively and it was just cool to experience Christmas and New Year’s Eve in a different way other kids.”
Their preparations for Advent and Christmas now begin “right after Halloween,” says Mai with a laugh. She thinks her decoration is “more classic and timeless”. Husband Andreas Ferber (41) has “always” liked Christmas, “but I think we celebrate it even more together,” reveals the singer. When asked what she likes to receive as a gift, Mai explains: “We tend to give each other time and moments together.” The musician also can’t imagine traveling too far away for Christmas: “We don’t want to go somewhere warm at Christmas.” On the other hand, she could imagine a holiday in the snow better. “We love going to the mountains in winter and will definitely do that this winter too.”
Vanessa Mai’s annual balance, which she will also look at at Christmas time, is very positive. “This year was just incredibly beautiful,” reports the singer, who is also on tour until the end of November. “So many unplanned things, so many beautiful memories, so many new insights, so much time with my husband and my dog, I can’t pick a highlight. I’m just grateful that we are healthy and live every day the way we do want.”
