Sonny and Cher thrilled the world as a harmonious married couple. But Sonny Bono is said to have cheated his wife out of money.

In her memoirs “CHER. The Autobiography, Part One”, singer Cher (78) apparently doesn’t give a damn about her late ex-husband, the musician, entertainer and politician Sonny Bono (1935-1998). Not only does she describe the toxic relationship she had with Bono, but she also says he enriched himself financially from her.

Cher looks back on her marriage

“He took all my money,” Cher explained during the promotional tour for her book. “I just thought, ‘We’re husband and wife. Half the things are his, the other half are mine.’ It didn’t occur to me that there was another way.”

At the time of the pop and TV duo “Sonny and Cher”, Sonny Bono ran the company “Cher Enterprises”, of which he is said to have been the sole owner. Singer Cher was therefore merely an underpaid employee of the company named after her.

“To this day, I wish I could ask, ‘At what point, on what day, did you say, ‘Yeah, you know what? I’m going to take her money,'” Cher reflects on her experiences from today’s perspective back.

World career after divorce

In addition, her relationship and marriage to Bono was also characterized by her husband’s toxic behavior patterns. He did not allow her to meet the other members of her band and allegedly tried to control her social life in other ways.

Cher met Sonny Bono, then 27, when she was 16. Together they celebrated musical successes with songs like “I Got You Babe”, appeared on TV shows in the USA as a couple and share son Chaz Bono (55). In 1975 the couple divorced.

Sonny Bono was later elected to the US Congress, while Cher also enjoyed huge success as a solo musician. In the 1980s she also broke into Hollywood and won an Oscar.
