The US election and the traffic lights have left their mark on Marius Müller-Westernhagen. The singer is critical of Trump’s cabinet and also of the German electorate: “Who do you vote for?”
Musician Marius Müller-Westernhagen is stunned by the political turbulence. “I am now 75 years old and have never experienced a political situation like the one currently prevailing in Germany and around the world,” said Westernhagen (“Freedom”) to the German Press Agency.
The singer is worried about the conditions in the USA. “The ministers that Mr. Trump is now nominating are absolutely absurd. It cannot be explained with common sense and has nothing to do with politics.”
The 75-year-old is also concerned with the situation in Germany three months before new elections. “The confusion is: Who do you vote for? Most people don’t know that yet. So if you think logically, it will result in a grand coalition, but you don’t know.”
Westernhagen: There is not enough WE
Westernhagen struggles with the state of society as a whole. People are now too ignorant for democracy, he says. “We are simply not interested and have forgotten how to think in social dimensions and about other people. There is now far too much ME in society and far too little WE.”
The Düsseldorf-born rock musician was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2001 for his socio-political commitment. Next Friday (December 6th) he will release his new live album “Live Waldbühne Berlin”.
