A new love is brewing in “Sturm der Liebe”. The new main actors reveal what fans can look forward to in an interview.
Soon the wedding bells will ring again on “Sturm der Liebe” (since 2005, the first) and mark the happy ending to the 20th season of the popular ARD telenovela. The starting signal for the 21st season will be given at the beginning of December. But a few sparks are already flying at the royal court, igniting a new love: Maxi Neubach (Katharina Scheuba, 31) meets the mysterious Henry Sydow (Elias Reichert, 32) at the roulette table. “It’s actually love at first sight,” says Scheuba in an interview with the news agency spot on news. However, the two are very different, but “take it as a challenge,” adds Reichert.
The new “Sturm der Liebe” stars also reveal what fans can look forward to and talk about the similarities they have with their roles.
Mr. Reichert, what parallels are there between you and your character Henry?
Elias Reichert: I give Henry my voice, my body, I breathe life into him and that’s why parallels arise. Henry, for example, has a very strong sense of justice. I try to maintain this in my private life too. Love is of course a very big topic for Henry and is also one of the most important things in the world for me personally. But there are also a lot of differences. Henry comes from a completely different social class than me and grew up very rich. Then there is Henry’s inability to be independent. He can’t even make coffee for himself because everything has always been made for him. I’m completely different. But that’s also nice and a great job. I like roles that come from a completely different background because it gives me the opportunity to explore it more. I have the feeling that it enriches me as a person to be able to deal with it.
Henry is actually a very complex and layered role. He’s not just the radiant man. He is not only the classic fairytale prince, but also has many subject areas where he has to fight, where everything is at stake and where he can show a lot of himself. This is a great gift for an actor.
Ms. Scheuba, you and your role Maxi have one central thing in common: you are both doctors and are currently reorienting yourself away from medicine…
Katharina Scheuba: I’ve never seen it that way before. But yes, that’s true. Maxi comes to the princely court to write her doctoral thesis. But due to a not very well thought out action, she soon loses her license to practice medicine. For me – privately as Katharina – medicine is still very close. I worked in this job until recently. The topic of medicine has not been ticked off for me either. But at the moment I’m focusing entirely on my acting career and I’m very happy to have this opportunity.
How did the change from everyday hospital life to “Storm of Love” go?
Scheuba: The casting was last winter. I was still working at the clinic then. My agent called me and said that they would like to see me in Munich. That was during the week, but I happened to have a 25-hour shift and the following day off to compensate. And so, straight after my night shift, I got on the train in the morning and went to Munich. The test shoot was great. It was exciting to be able to shoot with the whole team. Afterwards I went back and continued working in the hospital. A few days later my agent called me with the confirmation.
And then you quit your job at the clinic?
Scheuba: Yes, I actually had to make this decision because the two wouldn’t have worked together. It’s two full-time jobs. I then had a conversation with the clinic management and explained that I would like to do that. Thank God everyone was very understanding and responded really well. So I gave up medicine for now and moved to Munich.
How authentic do you find film vs. reality when it comes to medicine?
Scheuba: I think there are such and such formats. There are already some who are doing it pretty well now. “Grey’s Anatomy,” for example, is really good. There are also surgical and medical consultants on set and in the writers’ rooms. You can tell that the stories are written with medical know-how. That’s really great. “Dr. House” is also really well researched with all the unusual illnesses. They are often very rare, but they really do exist. “Storm of Love” is more of a fairy tale and not a medical series. You have to leave the church in the village when it comes to the treatment processes.
Have you watched “Storm of Love” before?
Scheuba: I only started watching “Sturm der Liebe” in preparation for the casting. But I also grew up without a television. That’s why I probably have a little more catching up to do.
Reichert: I actually only watched the first episode when the casting request came. I knew that the series existed and that it was very successful. I also know a lot of people who watch them. Funnily enough, a lot more came out as fans when I told them about the casting request. Then there were reactions like: “What? That’s amazing! I’ve been watching it with my grandma since I was two.” A small watch group has already been formed in my circle of friends and I receive very good support. I’m very excited to see how they like it and what they’ll say.
What is the dynamic between Maxi and Henry as a couple?
Reichert: I think these are their differences, which are particularly clear at the beginning. The two have very different opinions and interests, but take it as a challenge. Actually, both of them have completely different ideas about what they find important in a relationship. Nevertheless, they get involved with each other. That is nice.
Scheuba: Maxi and Henry have good chemistry right from the start, but Maxi doesn’t want to get involved in it because the two are just so different. At the beginning it even seems as if they have completely different values. But when they get involved with each other, they also get to know themselves anew. I think that’s very nice.
What can fans look forward to in the new season?
Scheuba: Lots of ups and downs.
Reichert: Here’s to a colorful season with lots of crime thriller elements and intrigue.
Scheuba: With Henry and Maxi it’s actually love at first sight. Even though they are so different, they immediately know that they belong together. But then a lot of things happen that put this deep love to the test – and we’re excited to see how it turns out…
