The dubious past of Marius Borg Høiby’s father

Mom became Norway’s princess, dad was already in prison: Marius Borg Høiby has an eventful family history. This is known about his father Morten Borg.

The allegations against Princess Mette-Marit’s eldest son are serious: they involve bodily harm, damage to property and there is also an accusation of rape. Marius Borg Høiby is currently in custody – a scandal of unprecedented proportions for the Norwegian royal family. While Crown Prince Haakon repeatedly commented publicly and called the allegations “serious”, Mette-Marit has not yet issued a statement. And someone else is silent: Marius Borg Høiby’s biological father, Morten Borg.

Today’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit had a brief liaison with the entrepreneur in 1996; they met through mutual acquaintances and are said to have celebrated a lot together. There is talk of drugs and excesses, Mette-Marit later said about the time that she had “exceeded the limits of what was accepted”. “I lived extravagantly and paid dearly for it,” said the former waitress. Their son Marius was born in 1997, and the two have shared custody ever since, but were not a couple.

Little is known about Borg, but he played an important role in his son’s life. After his mother’s wedding to Crown Prince Haakon in 2001, Marius grew up alternately at the Norwegian court and with his biological father. Morten Borg always stayed out of the public eye and was only seen in photos on special occasions, such as when he started school or, most recently, at his son’s confirmation in 2012.

One reason for his reluctance could be that he himself has a criminal past. As reported, he was convicted of cocaine possession and was already in prison. But these scandals were long gone: Morten Borg also married, became a father again and Marius grew up in two apparently functioning patchwork families. Borg’s marriage ended in divorce in 2019, but his ex-wife is said to have once said about Marius that she viewed him as her own son.

On Facebook, Morten Borg appears to be a bon vivant while traveling: photos show him skiing, golfing or sailing. He last posted a picture of himself and his son in February 2022. It shows the two of them in a restaurant, drinking wine. The fact that Marius Borg Høiby had been struggling with serious problems for a long time only became known after his first arrest in August. At the time, he released a statement and reported that he suffered from several mental disorders that had affected his life since childhood. He also struggled with drug abuse for a long time and was in therapy for that reason. “I will now resume this treatment and take it very seriously,” said Borg Høiby in the summer. He denies the more recent allegations and is in custody until November 27th. It is out of the question that his father Morten will visit him there: Borg Høiby is not allowed to receive any visitors or letters for the time being.
