The head of the UIA was not against the opening of imports but he had objections. “The point is under what conditions the economy will open. You have to look at international experience. Today we have the United States protecting its production, Europe, Canada, Brazil and from the point of view of restrictions we have fiscal distortions.”
This time the president Javier Milei and the Minister of Economy Luis Caputo They did not participate in the meeting of the country’s main industrial entity. The UIA’s claims to the Government were subtle. They clarified on more than one occasion that the industrial sector does not seek to be protected. “We want and can compete, but on equal termswhere our Argentine cost does not make such competition unviable,” requested Funes de la Rioja.
Following this claim, he requested that Congress address a SME law and a RIGI SME. But he admitted that it will not happen soon: “We all want to be first on the list but there are other times.”
In this sense, he took up a phrase by Minister Caputo about the need to “level the playing field” before opening imports. To this end, Funes de Rioja maintained that “such a balanced terrain is necessary that expands the horizon of the value chains that cross industry, agriculture, services, mining and energy and that with digitalization and the new technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution can improve productivity.”
