Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian had to undergo thyroid surgery. The reason: suspicious nodules.
Worrying news from the Williams-Ohanian family: The husband of tennis legend Serena Williams (43) had to undergo thyroid surgery. Like Alexis Ohanian (41), he has had “some suspicious nodules” discovered in the last four years. The doctors then removed half of his thyroid as a precaution.
Nodules would have “very likely turned into cancer.”
The procedure had a serious background: “The nodules kept getting bigger and the last biopsy showed that they would very likely turn into cancer,” explained the tech entrepreneur in a photo from the hospital bed. Because of his family history – his mother died of a brain tumor and fought breast cancer when he was older – the father of two “didn’t want to take any risks”.
The urgency of the procedure became clear on Thanksgiving: Ohanian learned over the phone that the removed half of the thyroid “was actually full of gnarly nodules that would very likely develop into cancer.” A shock for the 41-year-old.
Appeal to his male followers
The founder of Reddit is now on the mend. The worst part was the canceled workouts, he joked. He can already enjoy his everyday life as a family man again – just this week he took a trip to Disney World with his daughters Adira (1) and Alexis (7).
Ohanian is now using the experience to raise awareness among others: “To my fellow men: Go to the doctor – especially if you are fathers.” It was only in July that the entrepreneur made another health diagnosis public: During a check-up, he was diagnosed with Lyme disease. He also wants to have this disease treated, even though no symptoms have appeared so far.
