The British actor Rupert Grint, known from the “Harry Potter” films, has to pay over two million euros in back taxes.
“Harry Potter” star Rupert Grint (36) suffered a bitter defeat in court. Grint has to pay over 1.8 million pounds (equivalent to over 2.16 million euros) in back taxes after losing a legal battle with the British tax authorities.
Huge success as a teenager
Already in 2019, Grint, who played Harry’s (Daniel Radcliffe, 35) best friend Ron Weasley in the “Harry Potter” films, was asked to pay the sum. This came after the British tax authority HMRC examined his tax return for the 2011/12 tax year. Roughly during this period, the two final “Harry Potter” films “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and 2” were released.
In his tax return at the time, Grint had received £4.5 million (around €5.4 million) from a company that managed his business affairs as “consideration for rights, records and goodwill”. According to the star and his lawyers, this income was subject to capital gains tax. But the British tax office argued that the sum should be taxed as income. Judge Harriet Morgan now agreed with this opinion.
Rupert Grint has been part of the acting ensemble around Radcliffe and Emma Watson (played Hermione Granger, 34) since the first “Harry Potter” film “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in 2001. last year to 50 million pounds, the equivalent of over 60 million euros.
