The Spirit Awards trophies are traditionally awarded shortly before the Oscars. Demi Moore and Sebastian Stan are among the contenders for the prizes – a German film editor also has a chance.
Demi Moore (62) delights critics with her leading role in the body horror film “The Substance”, Sebastian Stan (42) attracts attention with his portrayal of the young Donald Trump in the film biography “The Apprentice” – both can now hope for a spirit Make an award. Among the many contenders for Hollywood’s award for independent films is the German film editor Hansjörg Weißbrich in the “Best Editing” category for the film “September 5” with Leonie Benesch in a leading role.
The favorites, with six nominations each, are the Cannes-winning film “Anora,” about a sex worker, and the horror drama “I Saw the TV Glow.” With these two productions, “Nickel Boys”, “Sing Sing” and “The Substance” are also in the running for the top “Best Film” category.
Amy Adams (50, “Nightbitch”), Colman Domingo (55, “Sing Sing”), Mikey Madison (25, “Anora”) and others are competing with Demi Moore and Sebastian Stan in the gender-neutral category “Best Lead Role Performance”. June Squibb (95, “Thelma”).
The “Best International Film” category includes “All We Imagine as Light” by Indian director Payal Kapadia and “The Green Border” by Polish director Agnieszka Holland. There is no German candidate this time. In 2017, “Toni Erdmann” by Maren Ade won the Indie Prize.
The 40th Spirit Awards are scheduled to take place on February 22nd in California. Traditionally, the association presents the trophies in a marquee on Santa Monica Beach. The awards honor film productions that cost no more than $30 million. Previous winning films such as “Moonlight,” “Birdman” and “Nomadland” each also won the Oscar for best film.
