There’s less and less time left until the theatrical release of Nosferatu the remake of the horror classic signed by FW Murnau in 1922 by Robert Eggersdirector of The witch and The lighthouse.
With Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Lily Rose Depp, Emma Corrin and Nicholas Hoult facing Count Orlok of Bill Skarsgårdthe film has been well received by English critics: its score on Rotten Tomatoes is currently 95%.
What the first reviews of Nosferatu say
“Nosferatu impresses and amazes at all levels (and it is clear that the Academy will take note). The cast is excellent, but Lily-Rose Depp dazzles with an electric and terrifying performance. Covered from head to toe in remarkable, spectral and eerie makeup, Bill Skarsgård may be unrecognizable, but his work is disturbing and his menacing voice fills us with terror“. (Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist)
“It’s clear that Eggers loves this guy, and the Skarsgård’s dedicated performance allows the film to enjoy making the vampire archetype return to its bestial origins.. (David Ehrlich, IndieWire)
“Eggers’ vampire is more stylized, more thoughtful, but less sibylline and terrifying than he should be (…) All the psychological subtlety is transferred to Ellen’s Freudian ordeal [Depp]who, attracted and repelled by the vampire, discovers the way in which these opposing instincts can be reconciled. This is an elaborate and detailed love letter to the original, intelligently respectful and faithful.“. (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian)
“I’ve seen almost every adaptation of Dracula you can think of and I know the story inside out, but Nosferatu still took me by surprise. And, above all, It scared me the way a particularly cruel nightmare does.the kind that wakes you up suddenly and makes you cling to the sheets, desperate to escape its ethereal clutches. (…) Nosferatu is not only a great horror film, but one of the best films of the year.” (Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm)
“This Count Orlok is a hideous, gnawed, twisted monstrosity.as repulsive as a movie monster can be. But she is also a sexual creature, a 70s porn star, as virile as she is virulent. He does not seduce women with the sophistication of Bela Lugosi or the underrated Frank Langella: his festering, ancient wounds overflow with testosterone. He is a threat to humanity, and he is clear that he is going to sleep with your wife.” (William Bibbiani, The Wrap)
