Who can access free PAMI medications and how to process them
In December, the requirements to access the list of free medicines were renewed. The benefit will be maintained for members with income less than a minimum and a half retirement. In addition, they must not have a prepayment, more than one property or cars less than 10 years old.
Those who meet the requirements must complete an online or in-person procedure that requires presenting their ID and a medical prescription with the diagnosis.
PAMI: medicines with an 80% discount
In addition to full coverage of certain medications, PAMI also offers discounts of up to 80% on the “PAMI price”, the preferential rate. It is an additional benefit that applies to those indicated for the treatment of serious or acute illnesses. And in the case of drugs for occasional use, the discount reaches up to 40%.
Some examples of drug prices applying the discount are:
- Enalapril (antihypertensive): The original cost is $8,419.9, but with the 80% discount, the price drops to $1,426.3.
- Alprazolam (anxiolytic, 0.5 mg for 30 tablets): without coverage the price is $5,803.5, and with the 50% discount it goes to $1,742.8.
- Levothyroxine (for hypothyroidism): its price is $9,536.3, while with PAMI it is $1,138.4.
- Acetylsalicylic acid (antiplatelet agent): the cost is $6,797.1 without coverage, and is reduced to $2,083 when applying the 60% discount.
