Elton John weighs in on cannabis legalization

Elton John has been clean for more than 30 years. In the interview, the musician sharply criticizes the cannabis policy in North America – and warns of the consequences.
Elton John knows all about drugs – at least from his younger years. The pop legend has now been clean for a long time. When it comes to marijuana, it is now surprisingly clear.

And when you’re high – I was high myself – you don’t think normally.”
Elton John has been clean for 34 years
This stark warning comes at a time when cannabis policy in North America is becoming significantly liberalized. In Canada, cannabis has been legal for adults since 2018, although with strict restrictions on quantity of possession and distribution. Many US states, including California, have also approved cannabis for both medical and private purposes.
The “Rocket Man”-Interpreter has been drug-free for 34 years and during this time has helped not only himself but also other celebrities to get rid of addiction. He acts as a sponsor for rap star Eminem and supported the British singer Robbie Williams during his first withdrawal. “It’s hard to hear how bad your own behavior has become”John admits. But this realization helped him get clean.
His own experiences with cannabis go back a long way: in a 1999 interview with David Frost, he revealed that his vocal problems during an Australian tour in the mid-1980s were due to marijuana use. On the advice of his doctors, he stopped using the drug at that time.

New documentary about Elton John
The musician is currently in the new documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late” to see. The film, directed by his husband David Furnish along with RJ Cutler, shows the superstar preparing for his final North American concert at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles – the venue where he played two sold-out concerts in 1975.
His last major UK appearance was at the Glastonbury Festival in 2023, part of his 330-concert slate “Farewell Yellow Brick Road”farewell tour, which ended with an emotional show in Stockholm, Sweden.
