Pope Francis expelled the priest José Justo Ilarraz, who had been convicted in 2018 for sexual abuse to the detriment of seven minors, who at that time were seminarians. This was confirmed by the Bishopric of the Tucumán city of Concepción, through a statement.

“The Bishopric of the Santísima Concepción of Tucumán, communicates that after carrying out a Criminal Administrative Process against Father José Justo Ilarraz, incardinated in this diocese, for crimes against the sixth commandment with minors, entrusted to the Buenos Aires Interdiocesan Court, and After the accused’s Appeal was raised to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, this body decided to present the case to the Holy Father, who ordered the expulsion of the clerical status of the aforementioned priest,” the organization noted.

Likewise, he added that “as the diocese of the Most Holy Conception we maintain our commitment to the search for truth and justice, we condemn all types of abuse and we accompany the victims with our prayers.”

Ilarraz, 65, is currently serving his sentence under house arrest in Paraná, controlled with an electronic anklet, awaiting a resolution on his appeal before the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.

The religious man was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2018 for having abused seven minors at the Major Seminary of Paraná, although the first accusations date back to 2012 and involve another 50 complainants.

At all times Ilarraz denied the accusations and maintained that what happened was a “conspiracy” to tarnish his name.
