The City completed the Honorio Pueyrredón Linear Park work

The Buenos Aires Government completed the construction of the Honorio Pueyrredón Linear Parkthe work that transformed part of Honorio Pueyrredón Avenue into a new green space that connects the 24 de Septiembre and Giordano Bruno squares, in the Caballito neighborhood. The intervention involved the creation of almost 10,000 square meters (m²) of absorbent green surface, a significant expansion of the pedestrian area, safer crossings and new public recreational spaces for thousands of residents who live and pass through these streets every day.

“The Honorio Pueyrredón Linear Park is a fundamental work for commune 6 and for one of the most built-up neighborhoods in the City, such as Caballito. It transformed more than 15,000 m2 of public space, added 10,000 m2 of new green surface and positively impacted the quality of life of 84,000 people. It is an example of how public space can be transformed to improve the quality of life of residents,” said Ignacio Baistrocchi, Minister of Public Space and Urban Hygiene.

“We connect the neighborhood squares through a green corridor and generate a safer, more comfortable and sustainable environment. Now it is everyone’s job to take care of it,” concluded Baistrocchi, in a tour of the new linear park that he took together with the president of Commune 6, Federico Ballán; the Undersecretary of Urban Landscape, Juan Vacas; the Undersecretary of Community Management, María Guadalupe Rossi; and the general director of Urban Regeneration, Cecilia Segal.

The benefits of the work

The new linear park extends along 8 blocks of Honorio Pueyrredón Avenue, between Gaona Avenue and Neuquén: in total, more than 23,000 m² of surface were intervened.

In an area that was previously reserved mostly for vehicular traffic, more than 16,600 m² of new public space was created, of which 9,556 m² are green areas and another 7,000 m² are pedestrian spaces.

Among the new facilities, two playgrounds with inclusive recreational equipment for children of different ages stand out; three sports areas with aerobic stations and training equipment, and rest areas with benches and trash cans. These are spaces that encourage gathering and outdoor activity.

The expansion of the green surface, on the other hand, included the planting of thousands of square meters of grass, more than 200 new trees (oaks, plane trees, lime trees, jacaranda, among others) that were added to the 100 that already existed before the work, and the incorporation of native vegetation.

In addition, a sustainable urban drainage system was installed, which allows filtering and delaying the arrival of rainwater into the City’s stormwater network, to reduce the risk of flooding in the event of strong storms.

The transformation of the 8 blocks of Honorio Pueyrredón Avenue involved a relocation of bus stops. Parking will continue to be permitted on the east side of the avenue. On the other hand, 9 detention docks were incorporated that allow loading and unloading of merchandise, and boarding and disembarking of passengers.

The creation of the linear park brings, on the other hand, improvements for the safety of neighbors and passersby: there are no closed areas or blind spots, security cameras were incorporated to improve monitoring of the area and lighting was reinforced to improve visibility in the night hours.

In addition, a protective barrier was included on the edge between the playground and the vehicular lanes to prevent people, especially children, from entering the road with vehicular traffic.
