The director of Better Man and the idea of using a “monkey” as the protagonist
Gracey also told Deadline how the idea to portray Williams as a chimpanzee came about after interviewing him several times over the course of a year. “I felt like there was a more creative way to get into this particular story.”said of Better Man compared to other musical biopics.
“I listened to those recordings again and, as I listened to them, I found that Rob often said that he had been dragged into acting like a monkey or that it didn’t matter,” Gracey said. “He was just in the back acting like a monkey. And he said it so many times that I thought, ‘Oh, that’s how he sees himself. He literally sees himself as an acting monkey.’ And I thought, ‘That would be amazing; I would love to see that movie.’ “That’s where the idea came from.”
