For 24 years, Asma al-Assad stood at the side of the deposed Syrian ruler. Turkish media is now speculating that their marriage is over. The Kremlin comments on the rumors.
Speculation about an alleged imminent divorce of the deposed Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad continues even after a reaction from the Kremlin. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov answered no to a question that also concerned Asma al-Assad’s alleged desire for a divorce. However, the question was formulated in such a complex way that it remained unclear exactly which part he was denying.
A reporter wanted to know from Peskov whether reports that Assad’s wife had filed for divorce and wanted to leave Russia were true, but that Assad himself had been banned from leaving the country and his assets had been confiscated. “No, that is not true,” replied Peskov.
Bashar and Asma al-Assad: Divorce rumors not yet confirmed
The Interfax news agency then headlined: “Peskov has denied reports of restrictions on Assad’s freedom of movement.” The state news agency Tass, in turn, interpreted Peskov’s denial as also denying the divorce plans.
Turkish media initially reported that Assad’s wife was dissatisfied with living conditions in Moscow because of the frozen assets and had filed for divorce in order to be able to travel to London. She also has British citizenship.
