In memory of the “Emperor”, FCB will be hosting a legends tournament as part of the club’s 125th anniversary.
In honor of its late honorary president Franz Beckenbauer (1945-2024), FC Bayern Munich will hold a unique legends tournament on March 17, 2025. As part of the club’s 125th anniversary, the small-field indoor tournament is to take place in Munich’s SAP Garden.
The FCB welcomes the legendary teams from Real Madrid, AC Milan Glorie, Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart. Philipp Lahm (41) will be part of the FCB legends for the first time as a coach.
Lahm is proud of his task: “We are looking forward to the tournament with spectacular top international clubs. Personally, I am looking forward to seeing one or two familiar faces from previous big games – games where Franz Beckenbauer kept his fingers crossed for us in the stands We will all never forget him.”
It was a particular concern of the FCB board
“Franz Beckenbauer is the personality without whom FC Bayern’s success story would have been unthinkable. His name will always be inextricably linked to this club. It was particularly important to us to support the ‘Franz Beckenbauer’ Foundation with this tournament,” Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of FC Bayern, announced.
Another top international team will also play for the “Beckenbauer Cup” in March, which will be announced shortly, according to the announcement.
On January 7, 2024, Franz Beckenbauer, celebrated as “Emperor Franz,” died at the age of 78. The former football player and coach spent the last years of his life in seclusion in Salzburg. In 2019 he suffered an eye attack and became blind in his right eye. Beckenbauer also had to undergo two heart operations in 2016 and 2017.
