The footballer Leonel Vangioni, Last time at Newells, he explained why he decided not to continue in the Rosario club and applied to have a second cycle at River, an entity in which he was a multi-time champion.
“It was a decision I made a long time ago. This was the third year I was in the club and I came a few months ago with this idea. I finished taking it this last week. I informed the coach, the president and the manager the day before the game with Talleres,” the defender revealed about his decision not to continue in “La Lepra” despite the fact that he had a renewal offer.
Along the same lines, he added: “I told them I wasn’t going to continue. Their idea was for me to continue. Mariano (Soso) had me in the project, but he understood my decision. “I also want to thank them for their trust, but it was already a decision that I had been thinking about for a while and I think it was the right time.”
Is Vangioni returning to River?
Later, in dialogue with TyC Sports, The defender applied to return to River, an entity in which he played in 2013 and 2016, leaving a great memory, since he played 129 games, scored five goals and won five titles, including a Copa Libertadores and a Sudamericana.
“Everyone knows the love I have for the club. I think I gave the best years of my career to the team, to the institution, to Ramón (Díaz) and Marcelo (Gallardo). Today the team is very good in that position. I think they have very high-level players. But it is clear that I would talk to Marcelo because of the respect and affection that I have for him,” he highlighted.
In this sense, he revealed that he was close to returning “a year, before I went to Mexico, but it didn’t happen due to different circumstances.”
“The relationship continued very well, there was never a fight with anyone. I have the doors open at the club. Always in my career I have been characterized by being very respectful and I have a lot of affection for many people who are there and they also towards me. That’s the most important thing,” he remarked.
Vangioni’s message to Gallardo
Later, he highlighted Gallardo: “He has a very high demand and personality. It is not easy to stay at River for 8 or 10 years like he was. He has something special that gets the most out of the player and that is due to the work, the requirement”.
Regarding the title he most enjoyed winning during his time as a “Millonario” player, Vangioni did not mince words: “The most special was the Copa Libertadores (2015). It had not been won for several years and “We had just won the Sudamericana the previous year, and also the local tournament with Ramón.”
“It was something that was missing. La Sudamericana is also special, having eliminated Boca in a semifinal… they were a strong team, tough to face. I am convinced that strong groups achieve great things. And well, it was marked in those years that we were there”he sentenced.
